Dental Registration Examination
This is to inform the public in general that section 22 (1)(g) of the present Dental Council Act provides for an examination prior to registering a person as a Dental Surgeon in order to determine whether he possesses adequate professional knowledge.
Consequently any person possessing a “diploma in dental surgery” or an equivalent qualification (for e.g. BDS) and who wishes to obtain registration as a dental surgeon is informed that he has to appear in a “Dental Registration Examination” which will be conducted by the Dental Council Examination Board.
The “Dental Registration Examination” will be conducted on Saturday November 26 2016. The time and venue will be communicated to all eligible candidates in due course. There shall be two papers of multiple choice questions. The papers will be set in English. A candidate shall be declared as having passed the examination only if he has obtained a minimum of 50 % marks. Candidates who have been successful in the written examination will be eligible to appear for the viva/voce including clinical/practical examination.
No candidate shall be allowed to appear in the examination unless:
- He is a citizen of Mauritius or he is a non citizen who holds a work permit or is exempted from holding a permit under the non citizens (Employment Restriction) Act.
- He possesses a “diploma in dental surgery” or equivalent qualification.
Note:
A According to the Dental Council (Exemption from Examination) (Amendment No.2) Regulations 2014 which was published in the Government Gazette of 2014 (Government Notice No 54 of 2014), a person shall be exempted from undergoing the examination referred to in Section 22 (1) (g) of the Act where:
- he establishes to the satisfaction of the Council that he is duly registered as a dental surgeon with the regulatory body of the country where he was practising dental surgery immediately before he applies for registration in Mauritius and he has practiced as a dental surgeon for a minimum period of 5 years in that country;
B According to the Dental Council (Exemption of Non-Citizens from Examination) Regulations 2013, which was published in the Government Gazette of 2013 (Government Notice No 222 of 2013), Section 22 (1) (g) of the Act shall not apply to a non-citizen wishing to be temporarily registered as a dental surgeon under section 25 of the Act where he establishes to the satisfaction of the Council that:-
- he is duly registered as a dental surgeon with the regulatory body of the country where he was practising dental surgery immediately before he applies for registration in Mauritius and;
- he has practiced as a dental surgeon for a minimum period of 5 years in that country.
Last date for Receipt of Application Forms is Monday November 14, 2016.

APPLICATION FORM AND GUIDELINES FOR CPD PROVIDERS
This is to inform all the institutions/associations/persons willing to be considered as CPD providers must submit the enclosed application form and must adopt the guidelines for CPD providers issued by the Dental Council of Mauritius.

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT(CPD)
This is to bring to the attention of all registered dental surgeons and dental specialists that Section 29A of the Dental Council Act empowers the Dental Council to enter the name of a Dental Surgeon or a Dental Specialist in the Annual List subject to the practitioner having followed such Continuing Professional Development Courses or Training Programmes (CPD). The effective date of the enforcement of CPD in the dental profession is as from August 01, 2024.
Section 29A of the Dental Council Act concerning CPD is reproduced below:-
Notwithstanding section 29 but subject to subsection (2), “no registered person shall have his name entered on the annual list unless he has followed such Continuing Professional Development courses or training programmes as may be prescribed by the Council”.
In this context, all institutions or dental associations or persons intending to conduct CPD for dental surgeons and/or dental specialists are requested to submit an application to the Registrar of the Dental Council of Mauritius. The application form may be downloaded from Council’s website (www.dentalcouncilmu.org).
Institutions, dental associations or persons having obtained Council’s approval to become a “CPD provider” for the purpose of section 29A of the Dental Council Act should submit a list of proposed CPD courses or training programmes which they intend to conduct during a defined time period for approval. Credit points may then be allocated to those practitioners who attend the CPD.
The credit points accumulated during the year will be considered by the Council at the time of entering the names of practitioners in the Annual List.
Note: “Annual List” means the list of dental surgeons and dental specialists who are authorized to practice dentistry during the year. This is in accordance to section 29 of the Dental Council Act.
